Introduction to the Wilpattu

 


Welcome to the lavish wild of Wilpattu Public Park (WNP). Going more than 131 thousand hectares, it is Sri Lanka's biggest and perhaps of the most established safeguarded region. The recreation area comprises of five blocks announced between 1938-1973 under the Fauna and Verdure Security Statute and is overseen by the Branch of Untamed life Preservation.

 

WNP ranges across the Puttalam and Anuradhapura areas, and boundaries the Mannar and Vavuniya Locale. The region is one of the main elephant living spaces in the nation and is likewise an extraordinary spot to notice the slippery Sri Lankan panther and the sloth bear.

Ramsar show on wetlands

The Whole Wilpattu Public Park, marine wetlands in western coast up to 10 km, Kala Oya estuary, Modaragam Aru estuary and Mahawilachchiya new water repository were proclaimed as a wetland of worldwide significance under the Ramsar Show in 2013. The area of Ramsar site is 165,800ha, of which WNP is the significant part.
